PORTLESS IPHONE : LET'S BE HONEST

Updated: Jul 16, 2022

This is probably the most speculated feature on the iPhone that is always doing the rounds. It sounds way too redundant at first, just like removing the headphone jack and charging brick. But before we start condemning every action Apple takes place, we need to understand its implications and basis.

A portless iPhone sounds more believable than ever before. Pressure is growing from the EU to make iPhone USB-C and also from the consumers who want faster data transfer speeds. But in evergreen charismatic Apple vogue, neither side is going to get what they want.

Apple will directly make the switch to complete wireless charging through MagSafe.

Mind this - IPHONE WILL NEVER GET USB-C PORT- because doing so means losing out on billions of cash Apple makes from their copyright of the proprietary charging pin, the beloved lightning port.

A port is stemmed from the world of charging. We often say “Plug in the phone”. Removing the port altogether would mean that it would always have to use wireless charging. Most cars support only wired Apple CarPlay. Well, back to mounting your phone on the dash as a navigation device. No Aux support will be possible in old cars where there is no Bluetooth. It won’t be comfortable any longer to use your phone while charging because of the colossal MagSafe ring. You might not be able to use your phone at all while charging because not all wireless chargers establish a cohesive magnetic connection.

Bid farewell to all wired accessories and earphones that you might be using till now. Charging in cars too will be a hassle as most cars only have 1 wireless charger if any.

Everyone makes it sound scandalous and malicious without inspecting both sides of the coin. The initial drawbacks are tough to swallow and envisage. But all bricks will fall into place once the rest of the industry starts copying Apple like they always do. Oh sorry no !! First, they will make fun of Apple and then do the same if they approve it.

And pragmatically speaking, your phone will become stronger, fancier and more water-resistant. The design will become seamless and will just look like a band of stainless steel running across. They would finally be able to free up space for other components or simply just use it to increase battery size which takes up the most room inside any phone. The speaker grills can also go back to being symmetrical which is very Apple-ish. No dirt and grime will get stuck in the port and cause charging issues later on.

As the Android market falls in line within a couple of years, there will be a boundless swathe of third-party accessories that you could buy to wirelessly charge your iPhone all the time. Don’t go on a buying rampage of genuine Apple accessories because they are notoriously expensive and there are only a few which are worth the steep dollar.

I feel Apple will hold onto a port for iPhone 14 this year after which they would finally ditch it. The EU’s legislation to force Apple to adopt USB-C will come into effect in 2024 so the iPhone 14 lineup might be the last one to get a port at all.

One thing that will really get my pulse racing is when I see critics stigmatizing every move Apple makes even when their own knowledge on the subject is half-measured.
