REALITY OF FREE VPN

VPN or Virtual Private Network is a service that I recommend every one of you should use. It fortifies your location, IP address, personal data and much more. But not many people use a VPN, let alone a paid one. We, homo sapiens are nonchalant towards our digital privacy and security but are the first ones to blindly forward misinformation and inflammatory content on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook without confirming its credibility. But it is imperative that we use at least free security tools to mask our identity not because we have done something unlawful but because we do not want to be harmed and abused.

Most people who use a VPN are free to plan users. A free plan generally comes with a lot of counter-balancing trade-offs. So in my quest to find the best free VPN for you guys, I set out testing several free VPNs and after excruciating evaluation, I have landed upon the conclusion that Proton VPN offers you the best overall package. It is safe and secure, has no logs in policy and works as smoothly as silk.
But it isn’t without its hiccups. Proton VPN does not work on my HP laptop which may be subjective to my device and location but this is a trend that many people recount. On my laptop, I have to resort to disconnecting it, again and again, to get internet services working. It works so much better on my phone. I tried to abolish this by deleting and reinstalling but no refinement. Voila!!!!

People often complain that free VPNs make a phone slow and unusable and that’s true !!!
But only when you choose the wrong server location. As for me, the free Proton VPN always connects me to the Netherlands because of its proximity but it is slower still than Japan which incidentally is much closer.
The case for me was far from susceptible to distance. I always found that a US server with the least load was the fastest even though it was always the farthest. Yes, there are some bugs now and then where the VPN just refuses to give any speed slowing down my internet speed to non-existent. It can be infuriating at times but disconnecting from the VPN for an hour or two gets everything buttery-smooth again. What was startling though was that it did not work inside the Secure Folder apps of Samsung which is evident from the fact that I see Hindi ads on YouTube even when I am connected to the US. This may be a Samsung thing but I just wanted to get it out there.
One thing that I would touch upon is VPN's effect on battery life. You can very well anticipate a 3-6% dent in your battery (if you keep it on the whole time) because of the VPN but it is highly volatile and is influenced by a number of factors such as battery size, phone’s age and efficiency, how long you use it and most importantly how rigorously. (Battery consumption is based on my 3-year-old mid-range Samsung smartphone with a 4000mah battery)

I have configured my Proton VPN to be always operational which is what you should do if you want to remain fully encrypted. The battery loss is distinguishable but it is honestly better than wasting battery on barbaric social media and live wallpapers that dance out and about. I implore you not to pay for one of Proton’s paid services unless you absolutely NEED the functionality that comes with it. Try not to disconnect from the VPN when in the middle of browsing, streaming or playing. It immediately lets the app know your real location and then they develop a conscience that you are using a VPN.

I don’t approve of the ongoing debate in the Indian Department of Telecommunications to ban VPNs in India because it is an attempt to bar privacy which is a fundamental right guaranteed by the world’s largest and greatest democracy.

FUN FACT TIME: In a research facility in 1946, engineers and scientists were running tests on computers but discovered an error that was causing the computer to malfunction. Upon investigation, it was found that a moth trapped somewhere in the circuits was causing the trouble. And thus, the term “bug” was coined.
PRO TECH TIP: Always keep your phone's battery level between 20-80 % to reduce the number of charge cycles.
