WHEN SHOULD YOU ACTUALLY UPGRADE ?

If you’ve got boatloads of cash lying around, this one’s not for you. You may stop reading this right away. But if you are like me and hundreds of millions of average Joes, then it is imperative and highly relevant for you to read.

Our lives and more connected than they ever have been and we are offloading more and more tasks to our phones. Technology, being continuously evolving, becomes old and obsolete after some time. This is when the cycle of upgradation begins and people crave to unpeel their shiny new phones. Right off the bat, don’t even wonder about changing your phone every 1 or 2 years. Unless your phone significantly benefits from the hardware enhancements, then you may absolutely make that purchase. You can easily stretch and use a phone for 3.5 to 5 years. The biggest hurdle you will face if such a long span is severe battery degradation. That battery capacity may easily drop below 80.

If you plan to use your phone for my recommended time period, you should have the battery changed after 2-3 years. Not later than as you would just be making an ill-timed purchase. Software is not going to be an issue as all Android phones are promising 4 years of major OS updates. As for Apple, you would be foolish not to know their robust software support.

Prefer going for a phone of good build quality. So that it does not easily chip, crack or cease to exist. The next biggest obsolete component is going to be the camera. It may appear grainy, dark and lacking clarity. This is something you are going to have to bear for as long as you can. The cherry on top is that you would be dumping less electronic waste in the environment which is an eminent catastrophe looming upon us. However, when you do make that purchase, invest in a quality product and use it for a long time rather than buying a 10-15K phone every year.
